NHS CV: write one the panel actually shortlists

Agenda for Change banding, registration numbers, mandatory training, and the wording NHS shortlisters scan for. Plus role-specific guides.

What makes an NHS CV different

NHS shortlisting is not like private sector hiring. The panel scores you against a published person specification, not a vibe. Each criterion is rated Essential or Desirable. Miss an Essential and you don't make the longlist.

The job follows from that:

  • Read the person specification before you touch your CV.

  • For every Essential criterion, write the evidence on your CV in the same language.

  • Lead with registration (NMC, GMC, HCPC) and Agenda for Change band.

  • Use British English, no Americanisms.

Frequently asked

Does the NHS use an ATS?+

Yes. The NHS Jobs platform (and its successor TRAC) parses CVs and applications into structured fields. The shortlisting panel scores against the person specification, not against a Boolean keyword search, but the parser still has to read your CV cleanly first.

Should I use a CV or just the NHS Jobs application form?+

Both. NHS Jobs requires the application form, which has its own supporting information box. Many trusts also ask for a CV alongside. Keep wording consistent between the two. The panel will compare them.

What is Agenda for Change banding?+

Agenda for Change is the NHS pay structure. Bands 1-9 cover almost all non-medical NHS roles. Each band has a job specification. If you're applying for Band 6 you should reference your Band 5 experience and the Band 6 competencies you've already demonstrated.

Do I need to mention my NMC PIN or GMC number?+

Yes, if you have one. NMC PIN for nurses and midwives, GMC for doctors, HCPC for AHPs. Include the number and registration status near the top of your CV. The shortlister checks this before reading anything else.

How important is mandatory training on an NHS CV?+

It signals you can start work quickly. Include current statutory and mandatory training (BLS, ILS, safeguarding levels, infection control) with dates. For specialist roles, mention specific certifications (ALS, ATLS, ENB).
